A number of recent studies have shown increased potential for dairy products to play a role in disease prevention and an overall healthy lifestyle.
One study in particular - released in early 2010 and featured on WebMD - highlighted research conducted by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Study (EPIC) which found that people with abundant levels of vitamin D have a much lower risk of colon cancer. The study of more than 520,000 people from 10 Western European countries closely monitored patients through blood examinations and comprehensive diet and lifestyle questionnaires/analysis over a period of six years. During the follow-up period, testing revealed that 1,248 patients were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. When comparing this diagnosis with the patient's information over the six-year test period, those with the highest blood levels of vitamin D had a nearly 40 percent decrease in colorectal cancer risk when compared with those with the lowest levels.
While the body makes vitamin D naturally after the skin absorbs the sun's rays, another great source of this essential nutrient is through consumption of foods and beverages like dairy. Real California dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese can be a great way to ensure your diet includes a sufficient amount of vitamin D in an enjoyable, delicious package.
