California Dairy Producers Embrace Social Media

As the use of social media tools like Facebook and Twitter continue to grow, California dairy producers are using these social media applications to connect with their own network of dairy producers, as well as expand their visibility beyond the pastures and have begun to develop a following from outside the dairy industry. Whether it's tweeting about activities on the farm, or blogging about the latest agriculture-related news, dairy farmers are showing first-hand what dairy farming is really made of.

Many dairy producers say that using social media is a helpful way to let those who may be unfamiliar with dairying learn more about what happens on the farm and puts a real face on the dairy industry.

According to a recent article from California Ag Alert, dairy producers are utilizing social media to provide everything from a virtual California farm experience to real-time "question and answer" discussions for consumers across the state and beyond. "I thought, if we don't start introducing ourselves to our consumers, we're headed for huge problems," said Barbara Martin, a dairy producer and active blogger from Lemoore, Calif. "Social media is a great way to connect with non-farmers. They can ask you questions and get to know you just by your posts."

By building relationships with consumers and fellow dairy families, California producers continue to share their passion for their industry and educate others along the way.
